Check Handling for Tellers
5:30 PM to 8:00 PM (Evening Program)
Paying “on us” checks and accepting checks for deposit are routine decisions for financial institutions. Both activities contain risks. Those risks are governed and, in some cases, managed by a unique combination of state and federal law. The law governing checks is state law, the Uniform Commercial Code.
This seminar is presented in plain language and supported by materials that serve as an excellent reference at the teller window and at the new accounts desk. It is one of the few training programs that can pay for itself the next day by helping the institution avoid a loss on a bad check.
Program Content Includes:
• Who are the parties to a check and what are their responsibilities?
• Cashing checks at the teller window, what should we watch for with on-us checks? Foreign checks? Government checks?
• Accepting checks for deposit, are the risks any different?
• What are reasonable identification requirements?
• Stop payments, what information do we need?
• How soon must we return a check with a forged drawer’s signature? Forged endorsement?
Who?
Program content is at the basic level and the expected audience is tellers, teller supervisors and new accounts personnel.
The Manual
The manual is a basic check handling reference and contact personnel continue to find it useful after the program.
What to Bring
Attendees should bring copies of contracts/signature cards they use when opening new accounts.
